The Wisconsin Badgers have moved on from three head coaches over the last decade or so.  Those names include Brett Bielema, Gary Andersen, and Paul Chryst.  Barry Alvarez (twice) and Jim Leonhard were also interim head coaches during that span.

One of those coaches made a pretty significant decision regarding the immediate future of his career.

Prior to the Texas Longhorns’ heartbreaking Sugar Bowl loss to the Washington Huskies, offensive analyst and former Wisconsin head coach Paul Chryst was a finalist for the Iowa Hawkeyes offensive coordinator job. He would have gone back to what will be an unrecognizable Big Ten conference next season.

However, Chryst has officially chosen to stay with the Longhorns after considering his options, according to Football Scoop.  Rohan Chakravarthi of Bucky’s Fifth Quarter further highlighted what this meant:

Chryst, 58, had been the Badgers’ head coach until the midseason part of 2022 when he was fired after a 2-3 start to the season.

He negotiated an $11 million buyout and moved onto Steve Sarkisian’s coaching staff last offseason, working as an offensive analyst and special assistant to the head coach.

Chryst’s name surfaced in several head coaching and offensive coordinator searches, as several insiders pegged him as a candidate at Oregon State and Indiana, while it was reported that he declined the Northwestern head coaching job before David Braun earned that role as well.

Chryst will continue to have options in the future and it will be interesting to see if he picks up another head coaching gig any time soon.  For now, however, he is looking to return to Texas and pursue another college football playoff appearance.
