It’s time for the Packers to fire Defensive coordinator Mike Pettine. This was another embarrassing performance under him, especially at home. This defense has way too much talent to be this bad. The Packers defense got ran over by the Minnesota Vikings by a score of 22-28. Mike Pettine has not improved the team’s run defense, which was the main problem last year. Its time to move on.
He is Not Aggressive
Too many times this year Mike hasn’t been aggressive, constantly playing prevent instead of attacking opposing offenses. He has the talent on all levels of the defense so the question is why is he playing it safe instead of being on the attack? It’s really mind boggling he plays prevent defense when the Packers have the lead instead of continuing to be aggressive. Look at defenses like the Pittsburgh Steelers. A defense that is always on attack no matter the score of the game. Mike Pettine should take notes from Steelers defensive coordinator Keith Butler on how to stay aggressive. Pettine not being aggressive has cost the Packers defense a lot, especially against high powered offense.
Misusing Talent
Someone please explain to me why is Preston Smith is playing in coverage so much. We did not pay Preston big money to play in coverage. We paid him to get after the QB. Preston needs to be, less in coverage, and more putting pressure on the QB. Does Mike Pettine know the Packers have a talented secondary led by Jaire Alexander? Mike must not know how good of a secondary he has cause he keeps playing them off 10 yards even on 3rd and short giving opposing receivers lots of cushion. Mike Pettine has the best young corner in the game, Jaire Alexander, who is showing that he is a lock down corner. Even Josh Jackson has been pretty solid and Mike won’t let them get in a receivers face and play press. Mike Pettine has failed the players more then they did him. He is not using their strengths to his advantage. Too much talent is being wasted on this defense.
Scheme exposed
Mike Pettine’s scheme has been exposed far too many times. It has one main issue. STOPPING THE RUN. Mike Pettine’s defense can stop the pass but is horrible against the run. Raheem Mostert and Dalvin Cook both had historic games against the Packers. Players do deserve blame, especially the defensive front, but at the same time Mike has made no adjustments. Matt Lafleur is seeing it now and isn’t happy about it and it’s time for him to pull the plug on Mike Pettine
