The biggest story surrounding the Green Bay Packers at the moment is the Jordan Love contract, but there are other things surrounding this franchise that they also have to worry about. They are looking to make noise once again in the NFC this season.
Love has the potential to be an MVP candidate. Right behind him, they will have to figure out if Sean Clifford, Michael Pratt, or somebody else could be his backup quarterback in case of injury. There will be other position battles to keep an eye on other than backup quarterback.
There also have been some injuries already for the Green Bay Packers. Injuries played a huge role in last season and were kind of frustrating.
Bleacher Report’s Gary Davenport’s Biggest Story For the Green Bay Packers Is the Backfield Update
Davenport of Bleacher Report had 13 different storylines heading into training camp. One of the biggest storylines for the Green Bay Packers he believes is the backfield update. Gary Davenport wrote about the Packers running back room:
“After the Green Bay Packers signed Josh Jacobs to a big contract in free agency, there’s little question that he’ll be their lead running back. Things get interesting behind Jacobs on the depth chart, especially after Green Bay used a third-round pick on USC running back Marshawn Lloyd.
Lloyd was sidelined by a hip injury on the first day of camp, but a familiar face in Titletown apparently showed up to camp ready to get after it. While addressing the media Tuesday, Packers head coach Matt LaFleur said that fifth-year running back AJ Dillon showed up to camp in the best shape of his career.
“This is the best I’ve seen him, hands down,” LaFleur said. “I think he would tell you the same. I think it’s just a testament to the work that he’s put in. He came back in great shape. I mean, shoot, I was joking with him the other day, you see the abs on him and that’s hard for a big man to do. He looks like he’s in great shape and I think he’s in a great place mentally. Obviously, we know what he’s capable of doing. I think he’s in a really good position to show his best.”
Last season, Dillon missed a pair of games and averaged a career-low 3.4 yards per carry. He seemingly isn’t giving up No. 2 duties in the Packers backfield without a fight, though.”
If Lloyd does not show up at all for the Packers in training camp because of the hip injury, A.J. Dillon will stay as the number two running back on the roster. Marshawn Lloyd’s spot on the roster is not in danger because the Green Bay Packers do have big plans for him at some point this season. Josh Jacobs will be the starting running back and he is in a better position now than he would have been with the Las Vegas Raiders.
Green Bay kept three running backs on the roster last season. There is a chance that the Packers keep four running backs on the roster: Josh Jacobs, A.J. Dillon, Marshawn Lloyd, and Emanuel Wilson. It would not be a bad thing to keep four on the roster because having depth is a good thing.
