The Green Bay Packers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers are fighting for their playoff lives this season. The Packers are sitting at 6-6 prior to their Monday Night matchup with the New York Giants. If the season ended today, the Packers would enter the playoffs as the seventh and final seed in the NFC.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 6-7 and sit atop the NFC south in a three-way tie with the Atlanta Falcons and New Orleans Saints. These two teams are in a “must win” mode each and every week for the rest of the season. That being said, the Buccaneers have been linked to a current Packers starter.
The Green Bay Packers Could Lose Safety Darnell Savage To The Tampa Bay Buccaneers
According to Bleacher Report, Savage, who is a free agent in the offseason, may be wrapping up his career in Green Bay. The report also expects Savage will be heading to another Bay–the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
If Antoine Winfield Jr. ends up walking in free agency, Tampa Bay is going to need a free safety who can roam the field. Savage can fill that role, as he has the speed to be a good center fielder and help cover sideline to sideline. He also has good ball skills with nine career interceptions and 31 passes defended in five years.
While he certainly isn’t the same caliber of player as Winfield is, the Packer will probably be one of the front office’s best options for replacing the 2021 Pro Bowler.
Is This Savage’s Last Season In Green Bay?
Darnell Savage has been the subject of Packers rumors for a long time before the start of this season. He became the 17th-highest paid safety in football when the team picked up his $7.9 million fifth-year option. In 2021, Savage, after a stellar first two seasons following his first-round selection out of Maryland in 2019, started to become inconsistent.
Despite this, the Packers gave him the option year payout in the 2022 offseason, an arrangement that applied to this year. With his limited playing time in 2023 (seven of the Packers 12 games so far), it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Packers move on. However, what the Packers’ long-term plan outside of Savage at the position will play a large role in their desire to bring him back.
