The Packers have not been active in free agency. The only moves that the Packers have are re-signing their own guys. This list now includes cornerback Kevin King to a one-year $6 million deal, with the majority of the contract in incentives. Here are all the important takeaways from the re-signing of Kevin King.
Joe Barry Could Help King Improve
Matt LaFleur and the Packers believe that Kevin King can improve on a dismal season last year. They know that his play, especially down the stretch, was poor. On the other hand, he was put into some bad spots as well. The Hail Mary touchdown in the NFC Championship Game is a good example. He gave up the touchdown, but why was he in that position in the first place? It shows that Mike Pettine was not putting the defense in the right position to succeed. New defensive coordinator Joe Barry has stated the defense will be better and will put players in positions to succeed. This can hopefully help Kevin King.
The Move Makes the Players Happy
The sports media and fan base were not happy that Kevin King was resigned. The players on the other hand are really pleased that he is back. Adrian Amos, Darnell Savage, and Kenny Clark were excited to have Kevin King back. No disrespect to the Packer fan base, but if Brian Gutekunst is making moves that makes players happy, that matters a lot. When players, especially the star players, are happy that speaks volumes about the culture. Aaron Rodgers was pleased when Aaron Jones was resigned as well. As much as everyone does not like it the players being happy is more important then anything else.
Trying to Re-sign Their Own
Something that the Packers rarely do is resign or keep their own players. The Packers in the past have let good players walk out of the door. The biggest ones were Casey Hayward and Micah Hyde, which really haunted the Packers for a while. Whether the King resigning was a bad or good one, it is showing something. Brain Gutekunst is trying to make sure that keeping around some of Packers own is top priority. The Packers are keeping around most of the 2020 team to make another run at a Super Bowl.
Flexibility in the NFL Draft
The Kevin King re-signing at this point is certainly a stop gap at corner. This does not mean he is the future at corner. This however helps the Packers giving them some flexibility in the NFL Draft next month. They will and should draft a corner, but will not throw that player into the fire right away. This can help the corner they draft learn and help transition into possibly a starter down the line. This can also help the Packers focus on other needs like solidifying the offensive line. If King can plays well maybe that changes the situation. We will see if he can change the Packers mind after the 2021 season.
