Today as part of the roster cuts, the Lions released QB Tim Boyle. The 27-year old has struggled in limited playing time in the NFL, but he could offer solid quarterback depth to many teams. The Packers are deciding whether or not they should cut Danny Etling, and if they do Boyle could be a good replacement.
The Battle for Third String QB on the Packers
The Packers announced their practice squad this morning and placed QB3 Danny Etling on it. Some reporters have alluded to Etling having an invite for the practice squad as the emergency backup. However, with Boyle becoming a free agent that opens the door for his return, and Etling potentially leaving.
Boyle played for Green Bay in 2019 and 2020 and reportedly had a great relationship with the Packers team and staff. He struggled, but didn’t play terribly in the five games he played last season. Boyle recorded 526 yards, three touchdowns, and six interceptions. It isn’t anything to brag about but the experience Boyle can bring, as well as his strong report, could potentially make him a suitable candidate for QB3.
Who is on the Hot Seat for the Packers?
Realistically, nobody yet, but potentially a few players. Jordan Love and Danny Etling currently will battle it out for who stands as Aaron Rodgers backup. Jordan Love is listed as the backup right now and Etling is on the practice squad, as previously mentioned. However, Jordan Love wasn’t overly impressive and Rodgers certainly isn’t the youngest player. Someone needs to be ready to come in, especially if Rodgers gets hit rolling out. Boyle has the most regular season experience between him, Love, and Etling.
Love will almost certainly serve as the backup this season, but considering he didn’t solidify himself with a better preseason, the QB3 position may be more valuable than everyone thought. Especially from the perspective of the Packers’ staff who are trying to give Love the best environment. Boyle may push Love more or help correct some of his mistakes in conjunction with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers staff.
