Cameron Payne is a 29 year old veteran point guard who was drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder with the 14th pick in 2015.
Since then he has played on multiple teams, the most significant of which is the Phoenix Suns.
He was on the Suns the year that they made the finals, and ultimately lost to the Bucks in 6.
However, now as of today he’s been waived by the San Antonio Spurs, who picked him up in a trade with the Suns this summer.
According to a report from Woj, he now has a chance to sign with a contender for the 2023-2024 NBA season.
Can and should the Bucks go after Cam Payne?:
Yes of course they should, Cam Payne serves as a very good back up PG on any contender.
For example, when the Suns were down 2-0 versus the Nuggets in the second round last year, after Chris Paul went down with an injury during game 2 of the series.
Cam seriously stepped up for the team when they needed him most.
They went on to lose the series sure, but won games 3 and 4, with Payne as the starter.
However the issue of can they, is a much more bleak situation.
The answer is probably not, given that the Bucks are $51 million over the salary cap.
We have seen certain signings in the past that seemed inconceivable monetarily however, so I wouldn’t rule it out entirely.
The issue is, other teams in the east with a bigger need to add talent to their rosters, such as the Bulls or Pacers, might offer more money to Payne than the Bucks have to bring to the table.
If the goal is to win, for Cam as well as the Bucks, then money won’t matter too much.
Money talks, rings walk, so we shall wait and see what happens next.
