Attendance/injuries – Deguara out, Wicks back
There was one new injury for the Packers entering their seventh practice, as Josiah Deguara missed out with a calf injury.
Dontayvion Wicks returned to practice after missing the previous four sessions with a concussion. Wicks hadn’t practiced since the first day of camp.
Rashan Gary, Eric Stokes and Grant DuBose remained out with respective knee, foot, and back injuries.
David Bakhtiari sat out practice, presumably due to a rest day.
One on ones – Rhyan continues to impress
Last year’s third-round pick Sean Rhyan won all his one-on-one reps on Thursday, beating Colby Wooden every time. That’s the second time the offensive lineman has shut out his opponent.
The o-line got the better of the session for the most part, with Yosh Nijman, Elgton Jenkins and Zach Tom holding off Justin Hollins, Kenny Clark, and Preston Smith respectively.
Devonte Wyatt had another decisive win, beating Jon Runyan with a spin move. Runyan recovered to win the next rep. Caleb Jones also impressed during one on ones.
On the pass catchers versus defensive backs side of things, the defense came out on top.
Carrington Valentine won all three of his reps against Samori Toure, which included a pass breakup.
Rasul Douglas locked down Romeo Doubs twice and broke up a pass following an excellent read.
In the top matchup, Jaire Alexander tightly covered Christian Watson on the first rep, leading to an incompletion. Watson had a step on Alexander in their next rep, but the pass was overthrown.
Dallin Leavitt tipped and intercepted a pass, while Corey Ballentine successfully jammed Deuce Watts.
Bo Melton and Keisean Nixon proved a close battle. Melton put a great route on Nixon in their first contest before failing to bring in a high pass. Nixon kept him at bay on the second rep, before Melton beat his man on the final snap.
There were some wins for the offense, with the rookies leading the way. Dontayvion Wicks announced his return by breaking Kiondre Thomas’s ankles.
Luke Musgrave had two wins, showing off his speed and separating from Anthony Johnson Jr. for a deep grab.
Jayden Reed had two catches versus Innis Gaines, impressing on a comeback route and winning on a short out.
The pass ended up incomplete, but Tucker Kraft put a move on Rudy Ford for a win. Shemar Jean-Charles continued to struggle with Malik Heath, who won twice, including a long catch.
Tyler Davis had a win over Benny Sapp, while Jadakis Bonds also ran an effective route and secured a catch.
Depth chart – new safety in the starting mix
With Bakhtiari out, the battles for starting center and tackle spots were somewhat on hold. Yosh Nijman began the team period at left tackle, with Zach Tom on the right side and Josh Myers taking his usual spot at center.
Rudy Ford and Darnell Savage had company in the safety rotation, as Jonathan Owens was worked in with the ones.
Tyler Davis saw some time with the ones alongside Luke Musgrave in two tight end sets.
Team period – rookie defensive linemen turn heads
It was an up and down session for the starting offense, as they often shot themselves in the foot facing a stout defense.
Love missed Musgrave rolling to his left before Aaron Jones tripped in the backfield to start the period. Quay Walker then shut down Jordan Love as he attempted to scramble, gaining only minimal yardage.
The offense picked up later, with Love stringing together completions to Doubs and Dillon, before keeping the ball on a read option and dashing for a sizeable gain. Davis was credited by Matt LaFleur for his great blocking downfield to help spring the run.
Bringing them quickly back down to earth, Kingsley Enagbare burst towards Love unblocked for what would have been a sack.
Success was found via an end around yet again, with Doubs taking the ball for a decent gain on this occasion.
The first team offense ended the team period on a positive note, as Love ripped a pass to Reed for a 1st down on 3rd and 4, beating Gaines.
With the backups, rookie defensive linemen Wooden and Karl Brooks continued to flash their ability, combining to ‘sack’ Danny Etling. Brooks had another win from the interior later and was in the backfield three separate times throughout the practice.
Jean-Charles effectively read what should have been a flare pass from Sean Clifford, who ultimately had to hold onto the ball for no gain. Fellow QB Alex McGough fired a wild incompletion downfield.
A false start from Kadeem Telfort was emblematic of a day where the offense committed a litany of pre snap penalties. Telfort had another false start later.
Undrafted rookie linebacker Jimmy Phillips made a stop at the line and has been getting himself noticed of late.
Four-minute offense – first-team offense wins
Tasked with picking up a 1st down in the four-minute drill, A.J. Dillon who ran for three yards, before Love hit Watson on a screen, which picked up around four before Owens made the stop. Dillon then converted for the 1st down with a four-yard run.
On the second go around, a toss to Jones went for four, before two runs by Patrick Taylor inside for three yards on back-to-back snaps to win the drill.
With the twos, Lew Nichols was given back-to-back carries, picking up only five yards in total and taking a hit from Eric Wilson in the process. Danny Etling fired incomplete to Kraft on 3rd down and the defense were victorious.
Two-minute drill – Douglas fired up
The situation presented for the two-minute drill was: Offense down seven points, on their own 35-yard line, 1st and 10 with 1 minute and 50 seconds left, and one timeout.
Love hit Doubs on a comeback route for 12 yards, before Walker stretched to deflect a pass intended for Watson, which fell incomplete. On 2nd down, Love tossed a perfect pass to Watson on a deep post, but Douglas contested and caused the receiver to drop the pass.
On 3rd down, Love tested Douglas again but threw incomplete aiming for Doubs, but QB1 was able to scramble for a 1st down on 4th and 10 to keep the drive alive.
Douglas was fired up throughout the period and continued to ball out, jamming Musgrave, before Taylor ran inside for a small pickup. On 3rd down, Love hit Melton on a slant to convert, taking a timeout with 40 seconds to go, 31 yards from the end zone.
Love found Musgrave for around seven yards and then hit Dillon to pick up another 1st down, before spiking the ball to stop the clock.
Facing 2nd and 10 from the 20-yard line with 10 seconds remaining, Love had time for two more passes, but both fell incomplete and the defense won the drill, with the final pass aimed for Toure broken up by Johnson Jr.
In the same situation, the second team offense went to work, led by Clifford.
The rookie threw incomplete to Goodson on a screen before Melton dropped a pass which would have gone for around five. On 3rd down, Melton bounced back, catching a 15-yard bullet from Clifford to keep the drive going.
Goodson caught a short crosser, before Clifford hit Melton again on a slant. Goodson then showed off his explosive ability, bringing in a short pass and scooting downfield for a massive play which almost resulted in a touchdown.
The drive ended with success for the offense. After Clifford hit Kraft to take the ball to the 1-yard line, he finished off the drive with a slant to Heath for a score.
Overall, the offense was deemed to have won the competitive periods of practice, meaning the defense faced its first forfeit of training camp, being put through up-downs.
Live tackling period – young running backs go off
During the first true live tackling of training camp, the young running backs showed out.
Emmanuel Wilson broke several tackles on an explosive run, before Goodson took one to the house, speeding away on a 38-yard gallop.
Special teams – Carlson’s inconsistency
Anders Carlson had another inconsistent practice, missing his first attempt in each of the two kicking periods, from 41 and 47, making kicks from 43, 45, 49 and 54. Pat O’Donnell corralled a high snap on one of Carlson’s successful makes.
