Packers news: With Aaron Rodgers taking his talents to the New York Jets this summer, the general expectation for the Green Bay Packers is that they’re not going to be a very good team this season — perhaps even in the next few years. While there are some folks who have a more optimistic view of what’s ahead for the Packers this year, the truth is that they’re just not going to be as good as they were last season. Not without A-Rod at center.
Packers News: Colin Cowherd Claims Packers Are Worst Team in NFC North
One man who has some very low hopes for the Packers is renowned sports broadcaster Colin Cowherd. In fact, the 59-year-old believes that Green Bay is going to be at the bottom of the barrel in the NFC North this season:
“Here’s what I do know. Detroit and Chicago are going to be better in the Packers’ division, and Minnesota is better, with a much better quarterback,” Cowherd said on a recent episode of his own podcast, The Herd. “They didn’t get a scheduling break. So Green Bay gets the Chargers, Denver and Kansas City. They’re going to lose those games, unless Jordan Love is really good. They’ve also got the NFC South, which you think is a break. But the ‘go either way games’ are both on the road. The Saints are probably gonna beat Green Bay in Green Bay. And then the random AFC game they got? The Steelers in Pittsburgh. I think it’s very possible the Packers are a five-win team. … They got no breaks.”
If you look at it that way, then the season does seem pretty grim for the Packers. However, to predict just five wins for this team in 2023 just feels a bit disrespectful. Green Bay fans definitely aren’t going to like this one bit.
Cowherd is not one bit confident about Jordan Love either. He points out that in a recently published QB ranking by The Athletic, the Packers star did not fare well at all:
“Jordan Love, according to 50 scouts, executives, coaches, coordinators, is in Tier 4 [of The Athletic’s QB tiers],” Cowherd revealed. “One spot ahead of Baker Mayfield … and two spots below the last player taken, Brock Purdy, two years ago.”
Packers News: Colin Cowherd Talks Green Bay-Bears Rivalry
Cowherd also touched on the Packers’ heated rivalry with the Chicago Bears, which is obviously a touchy subject for Green Bay supporters everywhere. While he admits that Green Bay has been dominating this rivalry over the past few years, Cowherd also believes that things are going to change in a major way this season:
“That at-Chicago game has been a W for the Packers it feels like for 20 years. I think in terms of offensive explosiveness, Chicago’s the better team now. The more athletic, better quarterback, more depth at wide receiver, and the O-line for the Bears is better than you think.”
I guess this is the biggest manifestation of the Aaron Rodgers effect for the Packers. With their ex-cornerstone quarterback heading to greener pastures, Green Bay has some very low expectations for them this season — at least in the eyes of Colin Cowherd.
