The Green Bay Packers have the opportunity Thursday night to prove this team belongs in the Super Bowl conversation in the NFC, and can legitimately make a run at the NFC North this season when they take the field against the division-leading and Super Bowl favorite Detroit Lions.
Thanks to a defense that has developed a reputation for timely takeaways, and quarterback Jordan Love building confidence in his young weapons on offense, the Packers have surged to a 9-3 start amid a three-game winning streak. A win on Thursday night would make things even tighter in the division, while pulling Green Bay to within just one game for the NFC North lead.
However, for as much momentum as the Packers have built up in recent weeks, there are still some critical areas that need corrected if Green Bay has any hope of upsetting a roster as loaded and dynamic as the Lions’.
Packers’ Matt LaFleur ‘Annoyed’ by Mistakes on Defense
Pre-snap penalties on defense have been an Achilles heel for Jeff Haffley’s unit, especially along the front-seven.
Entering Thursday night’s contest, the Packers lead the league in pre-snap penalties on defense, averaging 1.25 per game, having been flagged for 15 so far this season.
“It’s really annoying,” Packers head coach Matt LaFleur told reporters this week. “You’ve got to be conscious. I guess we’ve got to drill it more. I got to get refs out there in practice to tell when a guy is offsides. I’ve told those guys and obviously just telling isn’t enough.”
In a hostile road environment, such as Ford Field, the Packers’ defense won’t have the luxury of crowd noise to drown out Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s cadence, which could make Green Bay more susceptible to jumping offsides.
Against an opponent as balanced, explosive, and dangerous as the Lions’ offense, handing Goff and Co. free yards off pre-snap penalties could prove to be a recipe for disaster for the Packers.
