NFL news: Big things are expected from Jordan Love this coming season. The young quarterback is finally getting his shot after Aaron Rodgers moved on to the New York Jets in the offseason.
At this point, however, Green Bay Packers fans have not seen a great deal of the 24-year-old in the preseason. As it turns out, this is all part of the plan for the Packers.
NFL News: Brian Gutekunst Does Not Want To Risk Jordan Love Injury
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst shed some light on Love’s lack of playing time in the preseason. Unsurprisingly, the Packers are doing all they can to keep their new cornerstone quarterback as fresh as possible for the new season ahead:
“It’s a little bit of that double-edged thing,” Gutekunst said, via Eric Edholm of NFL.com. “You’d like to see him play a lot if you can promise me that we can protect him and keep him healthy. I think that will be something Matt, as he goes through it, it’s a feel thing for what he feels he needs.
“So, yeah, I go back and forth, and there’s part of me with all these young players — not just Jordan — that you want to see them play a lot. Then there’s times you want to bubble wrap them and get to the first game and figure it out.”
As Gutekunst admitted, the preseason is going to be an important period for Love as the Packers coaching staff try and figure out how to best approach the new campaign. As such, the team will be giving him ample time to showcase what he brings to the table. At the same time, however, the biggest concern here is the risk of injury, which clearly weighs heavily on the front office’s list of priorities.
NFL News: Packers GM Reveals Jordan Love Plan Ahead of Joint Practices
The Packers have two joint practices coming up in August against Joe Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals, followed by the New England Patriots. While Love is expected to figure significantly in those practices, Gutekunst still isn’t completely comfortable giving his new star quarterback the full green light:
“I think, talking to Matt (LaFluer) and working through those conversations, I think that’s going to be something that as we go, he feels,” Gutekunst said. “And luckily we have a couple of these (joint) practices that we will be able to go against some other teams, and that will be really important for us as well.”
I guess we will all just have to wait until the new season starts before we finally get to see a full-on Jordan Love performance. This can’t come soon enough with the Packers set to open their season against the Chicago Bears in Week 1.

Stop making excuses for the quarter back? If he is going to make it fine ? If not start looking for a new quarterback????
