NFL News: Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets will officially be on the same side for the 2023 season (and possibly beyond). Just days before the 2023 NFL draft the Green Bay Packers and New York Jets agreed on a massive trade to send the four-time MVP to the east coast. The trade was finalized before AND after many former Packers signed on with the Jets for at least the 2023 NFL season. A big addition for the Jets in pursuit of Aaron Rodgers was hiring offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett.
Nathaniel Hackett And The New York Jets Are Making Fatal Flaw With Aaron Rodgers (NFL News)
Aaron Rodgers is set to make his highly anticipated regular-season New York Jets debut in September. However, in about one month, Rodgers and the Jets will begin working on the offensive system during training camp. Nathaniel Hackett and Aaron Rodgers are obviously familiar with each other. From 2019-2021 Hackett served as the offensive coordinator for the Packers. He has that same role for the Jets in 2023.
On Thursday, he revealed that the four-time NFL MVP will be given a considerable amount of “freedom” when it comes to the team’s offense:
“I think there’s going to be some freedom with Aaron, and as we moved forward in the Green Bay system, there was definitely more freedom as we went,” Hackett told Peter Schrager on “The Season” podcast.
“We’re just going to continue that because you’ve got to take advantage of a guy like Aaron that is so smart and understands it. So, [we’re] trying to build this thing for him and build it so that when he sees certain things, he can do all kinds of stuff and put us in the best position possible.”
“I just want to see Aaron play some of the best football he’s ever played in his career,” Hackett told Schrager. “That was something that was so fun to be a part of when we were at Green Bay, and I want to see him get to where he wants to be, accomplish what he wants to accomplish.”
Why Is This A Fatal Flaw For The New York Jets?
In 2022, Aaron Rodgers made some questionable decisions on offense. He pointed out that Matt LaFleur’s offense needed to be more straightforward with less motion. However, LaFleur insisted on sticking to the same offensive strategy. Despite Rodgers’ impressive track record, the coaching staff ultimately decides the game plan for each opponent. Many fans saw the offense struggle when Aaron Rodgers went “off script” and called his own plays. Could that be the downfall of the Jets this year if he does the same thing?
Rodgers will attempt to live up to some lofty expectations in a significantly larger media market. Once Rodgers arrival became official, the Jets were instantly thrust into the group of potential Super Bowl contenders.
