The Green Bay Packers made the decision to waive 2021 third round pick Amari Rodgers during the 2022 NFL season. Rodgers just never was able to form any kind of connection with then quarterback Aaron Rodgers and frequently fumbled the football on kick and punt returns.

He was not out of work for long, signing with the Houston Texans. In the latter half of the 2022 season, Rodgers had 12 receptions for 154 yards and his first career touchdown. Coming into training camp, he expected to compete again for a spot on the Texans’ 53-man roster.

Unfortunately, the Texans have a plethora of young wide receivers, and Rodgers was not going to get the amount of playing time that he desired. As a result, Houston and Rodgers have mutually decided to part ways. He was officially released on Sunday afternoon.

According to Texans insider Aaron Wilson:

The Texans waived wide receiver Amari Rodgers in a mutual decision following conversations between the former Green Bay Packers third-round draft pick and team officials about what was best for him.

The Texans waived Rodgers, a former Clemson standout who played well last season, to give him a chance to catch on with another NFL team early in training camp.

The Packers did the same thing with quarterback Kurt Benkert last season. After signing him to a future’s contract, they released him in the early days of training camp so that he could hopefully find a new team. It was a move that Benkert said he really appreciated.

Benkert ended up spending part of last season with the San Francisco 49ers.

It is not yet known what team or teams may be in the market for Rodgers’ services. The Packers have their own core of young wide receivers that they are excited about, and Keisean Nixon was an All-Pro replacement at kick returner.

Given Rodgers’ comments on playing with Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay,  the New York Jets are likely not an option either.

Hopefully Rodgers can catch on somewhere and carve out a role for himself in the NFL.
