Richard Sherman was an NFL superstar at the corner back position for eleven seasons, and was also a huge rival of the Green Bay Packers in his Seattle days.
He is now a media guy, who occasionally gives his opinion on other sports such as the NBA. He joined the long list of folks who are talking about where Giannis will play in the distant future.
He gave let’s say an interesting, for lack of a better word, take on where and how he sees a Giannis trade playing out.
Giannis & LeBron teaming up on the Lakers?:
Yes, this is a serious thing said by an, at least ostensibly, serious human being. Now he didn’t lay out a complex trade package at all, just an Anthony Davis for Giannis swap.
” You’re saying I may not be here, how are you going to expect another superstar to come commit to a future with you “, he explained. ” You’re alerting the Milwaukee Bucks hey it might be time to move me early. “, Richard went on to say.
Once he outlines a loose connection between the comments Giannis made last week about his future, and a self-admittedly source-less claim that this could trigger the Bucks to trade him early, he goes on to explain their similar salaries. He then wraps up the point by mentioning that Davis is locked into a new three year deal that means he can’t be traded until December.
The comment about Davis’ contract and salaries are the only facts stated in this near two minute clip. Giannis will only be making around 5 million dollars more than Davis this coming season, at 45 and 40 million respectfully.
Everything else is crazy, most notably the fact that the Bucks would be willing to trade a better big who has shown his loyalty to a small market, for a guy like Davis who has demanded his way out of New Orleans in the past.
If the argument is that the Bucks can’t promise Giannis to be loyal and stay past his current deal, what in Davis’ history suggests that we could see loyalty from him moving forward? Just because he’s locked into a new deal for three more years?
News flash Richard, free agency isn’t the only way to leave a team, especially in this era where guys like Harden use the trade block almost as a replacement for free agency anyways. It wouldn’t be unlikely that the Bucks would receive a disgruntled Davis in return, which could lead to a Harden versus Rockets situation like what we saw in 2020.
These conversations of Giannis’ future just read to me as base-less, desperate, and shameless attempts to get into the headlines, and it worked, here I am writing about it. Congrats Richard, you did it!
