The Green Bay Packers, like all NFL teams, have to trim their rosters down to 53 players by 2:00 PM CST today. This means that many players that have been fighting for roster spots will find themselves on the outside looking in. In some cases, these are journeymen players or undrafted free agents that were in camp as extra bodies. In other cases, it means that players that have been on the Packers roster in the past will be let go.
Going into the offseason, and even more so after the 2023 NFL Draft, cornerback was a position of strength for the Packers. For this reason, 2021 fifth round draft pick Shemar Jean Charles has been released, per Tom Silverstein:
A bit of a surprise here: #Packers have released CB Shemar Jean-Charles, according to a source. Excellent special teams player who was competing for a slot position. Team played rookie Carrington Valentine in the slot late in camp to see if he could do it.

Shemar Jean Charles Cut by the Green Bay Packers
Despite what Silverstein notes above, the release of Shemar Jean Charles is not all too surprising. The Packers already have a top-heavy group at the position that includes Jaire Alexander, Rasul Douglas, and Keisean Nixon. In addition to them, 2021 first round pick Eric Stokes had an impressive rookie season before hitting a sophomore slump and suffering a season-ending injury in 2022. Even if Stokes starts the year on the PUP list, he will be back and is a lock for a roster spot when healthy.
The player that really impressed in camp was 2023 seventh round pick Carrington Valentine. His work during practices and his standout performances in each preseason game made cutting him impossible. In the end, Jean Charles’ special teams abilities were not enough to earn a roster spot in Green Bay.
That being said, he is a useful player on special teams and will be scooped up onto some other NFL team’s practice squad before too long. It will not be a surprise if he ends up on a roster somewhere either.
Jean Charles ends his Packers tenure having played in 20 of a possible 33 games. He saw most of his playing time on special teams when healthy, having played just three defensive snaps total in 2022.
