New York Jets superstar QB Aaron Rodgers has defied the odds once again.
After suffering a torn Achilles on Sept 11, Rodgers is expected to be medically cleared ahead of the team’s Week 16 Christmas Eve matinee against the Washington Commanders.
This is not a surprising turn of events, as the team opened up Rodgers’ three-week practice window on Nov 29 with the potential to see where the team is at while awaiting his return.
Should New York Jets QB Aaron Rodgers try to come back this season?
It would be a mistake for Aaron Rodgers to return this season. The team sits at 5-8, with former No. 2 overall pick Zach Wilson looking less and less like the answer every week.
The offensive line is the same. The skill-positions players are the same, so why would Aaron Rodgers willingly put himself back into that situation? The Jets play the Dolphins next week in Miami and will likely go 5-9. Why does Aaron Rodgers want to finish the season even though they aren’t playing for anything?
Rodgers’ toughness isn’t to be questioned. He played on a partially torn calf in 2015, torn ligaments in his knee in 2018, and a broken thumb last season.
An Achilles injury is different, especially for a 40-year-old quarterback. Achilles injuries can take away prime years off an athlete’s career. Rodgers is at the twilight of his career, and another injury could mean the end.
It would be a good story if the Jets were in playoff contention, and Rodgers’ return would precipitate a playoff push, but on the outside looking in, this feels like Aaron Rodgers trying to prove to the world that anybody could return from an Achilles injury in more than two months.
By doing this, there will be legitimate questions heading into the offseason if Aaron Rodgers will ever look like the same player or if the New York Jets don’t address their offensive line in the offseason. What will Rodgers look like if he doesn’t have the mobility he is accustomed to?
Either way, coming back from an Achilles injury in more than two months hasn’t been done before in sports, and it’ll be interesting to see how Rodgers looks if he is indeed cleared to play against the Commanders in two weeks.
