Giannis Antetokounmpo has played with the Milwaukee Bucks for his entire career, but could his future be with the New York Knicks down the line? Antetokounmpo was interviewed by the New York Times this week about his future with Milwaukee.
The Knicks and the Bucks will face each other on Christmas Day this season. When next month comes, he is eligible to sign a contract extension, but Giannis Antetokounmpo confirmed it won’t happen. In December 2020, he signed his five-year contract extension and will have three years remaining on it, and the third season of it is a $51.9 million player option.
It is also very possible that Giannis Antetokounmpo will not sign a contract extension next summer with the Bucks organization. They are under a lot of pressure to lock him up, even though he is locked into the organization for another three seasons.
Giannis Antetokounmpo said in the interview:
“The real question’s not going to be this year-numbers-wise it doesn’t make sense. But next year, next summer it would make more sense for both parties. Even then I don’t know.”
He also mentioned in the same interview with the New York Times:
“I would not be the best version of myself if I don’t know that everybody’s on the same page, everbody’s going for a championship, everybody’s going to sacrafice time away from their family like I do. And if I don’t feel that, I’m not signing.”
NBA Rumors: Giannis Antetokounmpo to the New York Knicks?

Antetokounmpo to the Knicks would probably not happen until, at the earliest, in the 2024 NBA offseason. New York has been linked to Philadelphia 76ers center Joel Embiid in NBA trade rumors as well.
The first season with Adrian Griffin Jr. as the Milwaukee Bucks head coach must play out first before Giannis Antetokounmpo can make his next move. Since winning the NBA Championship, they haven’t reached the Eastern Conference Finals.
Mike Budenholzer was the head coach of that championship team. If the Bucks have the same results as the last two seasons in 2023-2024, then anything can happen. Antetokounmpo wants to win another championship with the Bucks or, if need be, another team that is committed to winning, like the Knicks.
Giannis Antetokounmpo wants the organization to be all-in on winning another title down the road. That’s the most important thing to him for the rest of his NBA career. He is only 28 years old and is one of the top-five players in the league.
In 79 career postseason games, he is averaging 26.0 PPG, 12.0 RPG, and 5.2 APG. If, for some reason, after next season, he does not want to be with the Milwaukee Bucks for the long haul, then the New York Knicks can be an option for him.
They should get on the phone with them if it ever happens. For those who say it will never happen, don’t be so sure about it. Crazier things have happened before. The odds are that Antetokounmpo will probably stick with one team during his NBA career, but don’t rule him out leaving. The New York Knicks would become a hot ticket across the NBA with him and Jalen Brunson running the show.
