Not only has Christian Watson won over the hearts and loyalty of Green Bay Packers fans, he has started to win over the respect of national pundits covering the NFL. For good reason, too. The Packers rookie wide receiver has scored eight touchdowns over his last four games (seven receiving, one rush). He is playing with a joy that has helped give hope to Packers fans in what has been a trying season.
Of course, it has not always been all sunshine and rainbows for Watson in Green Bay. Earlier this week, Christa Watson, Christian’s mother, joined Drew and KB on 97.3 The Game to discuss her son’s first year with the Packers.
What has it been like to see your son being dominant in the NFL the last month?
“To be honest, it can be a little bit like an out of body experience. Christian has been a dominant force in football his whole life. And so, like being in your rookie year, it’s like being a freshman all over again. And he missed a lot of training camp, because thought that it was best for him to do that.
“To watch what has happened over the course of this season has been really cool, and surreal at times. It’s just unbelievable to me.”
How did your stomach feel when that first pass was dropped?
“I wanted to die, but not for me. I was sick to my stomach because I knew how he felt. And in that moment, I’m only mom and I knew how he was feeling.”
When you get to the professional level, do you sit with the other parents and do the other parents yell at their kids or the refs?
“That is probably the best question I have ever had. Me and Christian, or me and Tre (my oldest), usually have those conversations between ourselves after the game. I’m celebrating publicly, but we’re discussing things privately.”
What was it like moving from watching football in Fargo, North Dakota to Green Bay, Wisconsin?
“I’m going to be honest with you, it was like a Godsend that Christian ended up where he ended up. It was a seven-and-a-half hour move, similar climate, similar culture, similar people. Thankfully Christian had five years to get accustomed to it. I always loved Fargo for Christian, for many reasons. And I think that it is absolutely the right place for Christian to land in Green Bay, and not for all the obvious reasons.
“One of the things I learned about the Frozen Tundra is that once you’re there, you are family, and I love that.”
Christian Watson Stats 2022 [Thus Far]
