MLB Trade Rumors: The Toronto Blue Jays have swung a trade to bring in a shortstop the day after Bo Bichette left a game with a knee injury. Coming to Toronto will be now former St. Louis Cardinal Paul DeJong. Per reports the Blue Jays gave up pitching prospect Matt Svanson in return.
At the time of the trade being announced there had been no update provided on Bo Bichett’s injury. DeJong is an excellent defender, is a career below average offensive shortstop with a 96 OPS+, and has a $12.50 MM club option for the 2024 season and $15.00 MM in 2025.
The Toronto Blue Jays and St. Louis Cardinals have made three trades with one another in the past two weeks (MLB Trade Rumors)
Prior to the Paul DeJong trade being announced the Cardinals had previously sent a pair of pitchers to the Blue Jays. Toronto acquired lefty Génesis Cabrera in a minor deal on July 21, then over the weekend the two teams hooked up for the Jordan Hicks trade.
For the Cardinals this deal helps them shed some payroll, gain a pitching prospect back in return, and should help them become competitive again next season. On the other hand Toronto gains a right-handed bat, a sure handed defender, and security at shortstop should Bichette miss substantial time.
