MLB Trade Rumors: The San Francisco Giants are reportedly evaluating the possibility of bolstering their starting rotation by adding three time Cy Young award winner Justin Verlander. Jon Morosi reported this news on Twitter along with the potential roadblocks involved in trading for the New York Mets starting pitcher.
San Francisco Giants linked to New York Mets starting pitcher Justin Verlander (MLB Trade Rumors).
During the offseason Justin Verlander signed a two-year, $86.66MM with the Mets. His contract includes a no-trade clause, but years ago he waived that clause in a former contract that he had with the Detroit Tigers. With the Mets looking like sellers at the trade deadline it is possible that he swaps teams this season by waiving the no-trade clause.
From the Giants perspective they love accumulating veteran players on short contracts. Justin Verlander’s contract is massive, but President of Baseball operations Farhan Zaidi may be clever enough to swing this deal and possibly have the Mets cover a portion of Verlanders salary.
The Giants starting rotation already consists of veteran pitchers Logan Webb, Alex Cobb, Anthony DeSclafani, Alex Wood, and Ross Stripling. Bringing in Verlander would certainly bolster their odds of securing a playoff spot in which they are currently just three games back in the NL West and are tied for the top Wild Card spot.
