Days one and two of the MLB Draft have come and gone. The Milwaukee Brewers have made 11 selections so far. Of these picks they have selected two college bats, two high school shortstops, one high school pitcher, and six college arms.
There is one day remaining in the 2023 MLB Draft, but so far it’s been an interesting draft for the Brew Crew. They have bucked some reason trends by selecting more power over hit profile guys and by taking quite a few college senior pitchers.
Here are three MLB draft related comments from Milwaukee Brewers scouting director Tod Johnson.
When it comes to the Brewers first round pick (18) Tod Johnson believes they got the guy with the best power in the draft. He clobbered 31 home runs this season and overall had 71 throughout his three years at Wake Forest. Brayden Taylor or Yohandy Morales were both available but Milwaukee clearly liked Brock Wilken the most.
“There were a lot of guys potentially in play there, but when we landed on Brock, we were really excited to get probably the best power in the Draft. I’m going to say it’s the best power in the Draft.”
In the second round Milwaukee snagged Mike Boeve, who is more contact oriented. That isn’t to say power can’t be developed later. Joey Wiemer was not viewed to have a ton of power leaving college but he quickly flipped that narrative by mashing 48 home runs in two minor league seasons and 12 in the big leagues this year. Perhaps some adjustments can unlock some more power for Boeve as well.
“We do think the bat has really interesting traits to develop to get him more power.”
Drafted 182nd overall and in the sixth round was Cooper Pratt. He could be a steal for the Brewers. The prep high school standout is committed to Ole Miss and some scouts believe that he had day one talent. At this time Milwaukee is optimistic that they will sign him.
“Feel pretty good about the opportunity there. We have a chance, anyways, and I think we’re pretty confident it’ll work out. But obviously, nothing’s 100% guaranteed until the ink’s on the paper.”
