2023 MLB Draft: For the second time in three years the Pittsburgh Pirates had the first overall pick in the MLB draft. In 2021 they selected catcher Henry Davis from Louisville. Two years later they selected LSU star pitcher Paul Skenes with the first overall pick.
Leading up to this pick there was some speculation that Pittsburgh was shopping below-slot numbers to four different players. However as expected phenom college pitcher Paul Skenes was the selection. Per Joe Doyle his deal will be in the neighborhood of $9.25 million.

The right pick. Generational arm

Could just be the perfect pick. Henry Davis with their first overall pick just a couple years ago, and now Paul Skenes who is considered the best pitcher in the draft class. This is an obvious turnaround for the Pittsburgh organization.

That’s exciting but I feel like we will regret not picking Crews…

Paul Skenes will lead the league multiple times in strikeouts and will win at least one Cy Young Award. Hopefully, he does it all in Pittsburgh. Welcome aboard, Captain, time to steer this Pirate ship.
