The NBA Trade Deadline day was eventful, but the Milwaukee Bucks might have solved a major problem by acquiring Patrick Beverley from the Philadelphia 76ers. Milwaukee traded Cameron Payne and a 2027 second-round draft pick to the Philadelphia 76ers for Beverley.
What Can Patrick Beverley Help The Milwaukee Bucks With?
The simple answer is defense. That’s also why they hired Doc Rivers mid-season. Milwaukee trading Jrue Holiday for Damian Lillard was a defensive sacrifice for offensive star power. Before the season began, the Bucks picked up a 30 PPG scorer to pair with their own 30 PPG scorer Giannis. However, the drop in their defense became exceedingly significant and has cost them several games in the season.
This drop in their defensive play affected them, especially by the perimeter. Patrick Beverley is a well-known perimeter defender who will scrape his way to every rebound and loose ball. This addition will also help the Bucks close in on the one-seed, as the Boston Celtics currently have that top seed. They also have Milwaukee’s former defensive perimeter beast in Jrue Holiday.
Patrick Beverley’s Career In A Nutshell
Beverley has become a journeyman throughout the more recent half of his career, as he’s now on his sixth team in four seasons. The three-time all-defensive player is averaging 6.3 points, three rebounds, and three assists per game this season while shooting nearly a career-high 43.2% from the field. It’s the best he has been shooting since his time in Houston in the 2015-2016 season.
However, Patrick is recognized for how he plays defensively. He loves to get into people’s heads and be a defensive coach on the court. Bucks head coach Doc Rivers acknowledged how he likes how Beverley talks on the court. There are many clips on social media of Beverley with the clipboard, as if he’s a coach talking to his new teammates during timeouts already.
Adding Patrick Beverley could hopefully reduce or eliminate Milwaukee’s transition and perimeter defense issues as we get close r to the playoffs.
