There’s no denying Milwaukee Bucks’ Doc Rivers has been on the receiving end of so much criticism for most of his coaching career. Turns out, a lot of eyes will be on him to see if he’ll succeed in making the Giannis Antetokounmpo-led team a credible competitor.
After the Bucks’ early playoff exit in the 2023-24 season, Rivers issued a big promise to the team and its fans. The franchise had acquired All-Star Damian Lillard during the offseason, pairing him with two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo, but the duo never really reached their full potential under former coach Adrian Griffin.
Rivers took over as head coach midway through the season, but was unable to lead the Bucks deep into the playoffs. Giannis was injured before the first-round series against the Indiana Pacers, and Lillard missed crucial games, leading to their early elimination.
Despite the disappointment, Rivers expressed his commitment to the Bucks organization. He told reporters that he will do whatever he can for the franchise and that he believes the team can win. Rivers acknowledged the usual desire for a break after a season, but said he can’t wait to get started and get to work on the team’s needs for the upcoming year.
Milwaukee Bucks’ Doc Rivers Among NBA Coaches on the Hot Seat This 2024-25 Season
Heading into the 2024-25 season, there are a couple of head coaches that have more pressure placed on their shoulders. In an article written by Zach Buckley for Bleacher Report, Rivers is one of those on the hot seat for the upcoming campaign.
“As he readily relayed, Doc Rivers walked into a tricky situation last season. Hired in late January, he had to fashion the Milwaukee Bucks into title contenders on the fly, all while navigating around injuries to Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton.
Even if graded on a curve, though, it’s hard to assess Rivers’ first half-season in the Gopher State as anything other than a failure. Milwaukee was 32-14 when he arrived and went just 19-23 after, including a first-round loss to the sixth-seeded Indiana Pacers.
That dismal showing should increase the scrutiny on Rivers, who no longer has the built-in excuse of taking over midway through a campaign. He’ll have a full offseason, training camp and regular season to return the Bucks (champions in 2021) to juggernaut status.
Due to the collective age of this roster, this franchise faces as much urgency as anyone. Rivers will have no margin for error. He either needs to pave a path back to the top of the Eastern Conference, or Milwaukee will have to replace him with someone who can.” Buckley wrote.
As observed by fans and critics alike, Rivers was placed in a difficult position by taking over the team midway through the season. With a full offseason to prepare, he is hopeful that he can produce better results for the Bucks in the 2024-25 campaign. The team’s front office will also need to provide more support around Giannis and Lillard to help the Bucks reach their full potential.
Without doubt, a lot of people will be keeping an eye on Rivers to see if he can turn things around in Milwaukee. If he doesn’t, expect the front office to start the wheels turning on his replacement sooner than later.
