The Marquette Golden Eagles lost to the St. John’s Red Storm in the BIG East Conference semifinals on Friday night. With Marquette falling short in the BIG East tournament, it did not hurt their chances of missing the big dance.

On Sunday, it was announced that the Golden Eagles will be the seventh seed in the South Region and they will face the #10 New Mexico Lobos on Friday in Cleveland, Ohio. The game will tip off at 6:25 p.m. CT on TBS. This will not be an easy game for Marquette against a tough New Mexico basketball team.

Marquette last played on Friday in the BIG East Tournament and they will have a week off before they play next in March Madness. The Golden Eagles fanbase is looking forward to the matchup against the Lobos. This is what some of the Marquette fans had to say about this next game:

We need Kam to be amazing

Jop to drain 3’s like it’s DePaul

Stevie to be Stevie, and hit some 3’s

    Chase Ross ultimate X factor

    Zaide Lowery ULTIMATE X factor

Get BG some comfortable looks and continue to play BIG, need him!

Marquette, if it gets past New Mexico, will have a decent contingent of fans there. But Marquette doesn’t have the alumni base that MSU has for a Cleveland takeover.
I think Cleveland is going to feel a lot like East Lansing next weekend”. msu writer

    Good season boys!

    2 wins from Sweet 16!

The fanbase is ready for March Madness and it is still a few days away from getting started for the Golden Eagles. Marquette got to the second weekend of March Madness last season before losing to the North Carolina State Wolfpack in the Sweet 16.

Potential Michigan State Spartans Matchup In Round 2

Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo walks off the court after 77-74 loss to Wisconsin at the Big Ten Tournament semifinal at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. on Saturday, March 15, 2025.

If Marquette were to get past New Mexico in round one, they would most likely face #2 Michigan State Spartans in the second round, unless #15 Bryant Bulldogs pulls off a massive upset in the first round. A lot of people think that Michigan State could be a Final Four team this season.

It remains to be seen what will happen in the first round. However, a potential Marquette vs Michigan State second-round matchup could be interesting also.
