Even with all the success and controversies he has experienced, head coach Doc Rivers still has some things he would have done as an active player. During a practice session with the Milwaukee Bucks, he imparted that thought to All-Star guard Damian Lillard and other players in the lineup.
Born in 1961 in Chicago, Rivers played college basketball at Marquette University, where he was a standout player. He was then selected in the second round of the 1983 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks, with whom he played point guard for eight seasons. He was named an NBA All-Star in 1988 and was known for his stellar playmaking abilities.
After retiring as a player in 1996, Rivers transitioned into coaching. He had a successful stint as the head coach of the Orlando Magic from 1999 to 2003, being named NBA Coach of the Year in 2000. He then took over as the head coach of the Boston Celtics in 2004, leading them to an NBA championship in 2008. He later coached the Los Angeles Clippers from 2013 to 2020 and the Philadelphia 76ers from 2020 to 2023, before being hired by the Milwaukee Bucks in 2024.
Rivers is widely respected in the NBA and has been named one of the 15 greatest coaches in league history. He has four All-Star Game head coaching appearances and is known for his adaptability and player-friendly approach. His successful playing and coaching career have cemented his status as a basketball legend.
Head Coach Doc Rivers Imparts Wish About Playing Career to Milwaukee Bucks Players
Before the season begins, Rivers was seen conducting a practice session for aspiring hoopers who attended Formula Zero’s Pro Camp. In a video shared by Formula Zero on Instagram, Milwaukee’s head coach revealed the things he wanted to do again if given the chance to play in league.

Earlier this year, Rivers agreed to become the new head coach of the Bucks after Adrian Griffin was fired. However, Milwaukee was booted out of contention when they were eliminated in the first round by Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers.
With the NBA set to return soon, it’ll be seen if the Bucks can apply Rivers’ lesson on the court or not. With two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo leading the pack, a lot of eyes will be on Milwaukee and their quest for another ring.
