Milwaukee Bucks: Brook Lopez Will be the Key to Re-Establishing ‘Elite Defense’ Next Season

At 36, there’s no denying that Milwaukee Bucks big man Brook Lopez is now entering the twilight years of his career — if he hasn’t already. Be that as it may, the two-time All-Defense big man came out to prove last season that he is still very much capable of being an elite defender in the NBA.

As a matter of fact, Bucks team insider Eric Nehm of The Athletic firmly believes that Lopez will be the key to the Bucks re-establishing themselves as one of the top defensive teams in the league in 2024-25.

Nehm recently published a lengthy analysis about what the Bucks will need to do to become an elite defensive unit next season. This wasn’t exactly the case for them this past year, and the fact that they got bounced in the first round of the NBA Playoffs for a second season running is a testament to this notion.

According to Nehm, Milwaukee will need to make significant improvements on the defensive end if they want to be a serious contender for the title next season. The reporter believes that it all starts with Lopez:

“According to the individual rim protection stats calculated by The Athletic’s Seth Partnow, Lopez actually put together the league’s second most valuable rim protection season, trailing only Thunder center Chet Holmgren. Last season, Lopez contested a league-leading 46.2 percent of the shots attempted at the rim and opponents shot 53.2 percent with him contesting shots at the rim, 10th among the 100 defenders that contested at least 200 shots this season.

“On top of that, for the sixth consecutive season, lineups with Lopez grabbed a higher percentage of available defensive rebounds than lineups without him. While the Bucks weren’t as effective as they have been at grabbing defensive rebounds with Lopez in previous seasons, they still nabbed 75.3 percent of available defensive rebounds with Lopez on the floor, a number that puts them in the 84th percentile league-wide, per Cleaning the Glass.

“To summarize, Lopez was one of the league’s best rim protectors and a positive force for the Bucks on the defensive glass. If he can do that again next season, he would absolutely be a viable anchor for an elite defense.” wrote Nehm.

It goes without saying that Giannis Antetokounmpo will still be Milwaukee’s most important player on both sides of the ball. However, it’s also true that Lopez, who was once a runner-up for the Defensive Player of the Year, will also play an undeniably integral role for the Bucks in 2024-25, particularly on the defensive end.

If Lopez is able to establish himself as a formidable anchor on defense for the Bucks, this team will go places next term.
