The Milwaukee Brewers have executed their second trade of the offseason. A few days ago they traded away two top 30 prospects for Philadelphia Phillies breakout prospect infielder Oliver Dunn. Now they have shipped Abraham Toro to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitcher Chad Patrick.
Abraham Toro has been traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Oakland Athletics in exchange for Chad Patrick.
Infielder Abraham Toro was originally acquired by the Brewers last offseason in the deal that also involved Jesse Winker and Kolten Wong. Prior to being a Seattle Mariner he was a Houston Astro. The Oakland Athletics will be his fourth major league team.
Despite a strong season in Triple-A consisting of a .291 batting average, .845 OPS, and 36 doubles the switch hitter did not get a long look on the Brewers big league roster. He is arbitration eligible for the 2024 season and is out of minor league options. Both of these reasons may be why the Brewers elected to trade him a few days before the non-tender deadline.
Coming to Milwaukee is 25 year old pitcher Chad Patrick. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks. The Diamondbacks traded him to Oakland last summer in order to acquire former Brewer Jace Peterson. Milwaukee will now be his third organization since being drafted.
On paper Chad Patrick did not have a great 2023 season. He started 26 games but across three levels he ended the year with a 5.59 ERA. He did strike out more batters (129) than innings pitched (124). On the mound he does not blow hitters away with velocity, but he commands a mid 80s cutter with his low 90s fastball.
The non-tender deadline across major league baseball is this coming Friday evening. Milwaukee could swing more trades before then, especially for players bubble roster players.
