The Milwaukee Brewers and St Louis Cardinals have a long-standing history together and have played each other numerous times. On Monday May 15,2023 history was made as the Brew Crew suffered their worst loss in franchise history to the Red Birds. The final score was 18-1.
According to Brewers beat reporter Adam McCalvy 18 runs are the most that the Cardinals have ever scored against their division rival. Statistician Dominic Controneo took this a step further by providing the largest run differential margin on either club’s side. Previously the Brewers best victory was by 15 runs in 2020 and the Cardinals 13 in 2003.

How did the Cardinals put up 18 runs? A Nolan Arenado three run home run got them started in the first inning. They added one additional run in the second inning, four in the sixth inning, and then scored 10 runs in the eighth inning.
Starting pitcher Freddy Peralta was tagged with six earned runs in this game. Bryse Wilson surrendered two runs, Gus Varland nine, and position player Mike Brosseau one run. It is worth noting that Andrew Knizner hit a grand slam off of Mike Brosseau in which all of the runners on base were Gus Varland’s responsibility.
A few other crazy statistics from this game include Gus Varland’s ERA jumping from 2.25 to 11.42. The Milwaukee Brewers run differential also decreased from +20 to +3.
Fortunately for the Brewers this is just one loss. Game two of the series will be Tuesday night in which Wade Miley will be on the hill for Milwaukee and Jordan Montgomery for St. Louis.
