The Milwaukee Brewers currently have an unorthodox left-handed reliever in Hoby Milner. Throughout Craig Counsell’s tenure as manager he has used these types of pitchers quite frequently. Alex Claudio in 2019 was a great example of this and that year he matched Ken Sanders franchise record in appearances with 83. As it stands today, Hoby Milner is on pace to break this record.

Hoby Milner is on pace to break a Milwaukee Brewers franchise record in appearances.
To begin the 2023 season, Hoby Milner has made 12 appearances. The team has played 22 games. If this pace were to continue he would appear in 88 total games this season, which would surpass the previous franchise record for appearances in 83.
Hoby Milner is pitching for the 12th time in the Brewers’ first 22 games, a pace for 88 appearances. The club record is 83 appearances, set by Ken Sanders in 1971 and matched by Alex Claudio in 2019.

Hoby Milner is currently the only southpaw in the Milwaukee Brewers bullpen. This may be contributing to his high usage rate. However, a season ago he appeared in 67 games which was the second most on the team. Brad Boxberger led the team with 70 appearances in 2022.
The Brewers likely will add another left-handed relief pitcher to the active roster at some point this season. Bennett Sousa is a healthy internal option and Justin Wilson is a future option that is currently on the 60-day injured list and recovering from Tommy John surgery. Coincidentally Alex Claudio is in the Brewers organization on a minor league deal, but an external addition is also a possibility.
