The Milwaukee Brewers re-signed starting pitcher Colin Rea to a 1-year deal worth $3.5 million in 2024 with a club option for the 2025 season. Rea is 33 years old and he had a good year last year for Milwaukee. He had a 6-6 record last season with a 4.55 ERA, In 26 games pitched, Colin Rea pitched in 124.2 innings and gave up 110 hits and 65 runs.
He also walked 38 batters and has struck out 110. His WHIP was 1.187 last season. Colin Rea being signed means that the Brewers get to keep him for another season and not worry about finding someone to replace him. Rea improved as the season went on and will be one of the five starting pitchers next season in the rotation.
Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta, and Colin Rea will be the top three starting pitchers entering the 2024 season for the Brewers. Brandon Woodruff will miss most of next season due to shoulder surgery. The question after re-signing Colin Rea will be who will be the fourth and fifth starters until Woodruff returns, if he does at all?
The fourth starter can very well be Wade Miley, and then it will get interesting after that for the fifth starting pitcher spot next season. Milwaukee could go with some internal options, but they also may need to sign someone or make a trade.
It all depends on what general manager Matt Arnold wants to do.
Rea being re-signed solves one of those problems.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ Re-Signing Colin Rea Is Huge For Them Because he can take on a bigger role next Season
Rea being re-signed means he can take a bigger role next season and might be the number two starter for the Brewers because of the Brandon Woodruff injury. Corbin Burnes can very well be Milwaukee’s Opening Day starter in 2024.
Rea earned his contract for the Brewers, and he stepped up for them in a big way. The Brewers had a 90-72 record and won the National League Central title before losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League Wild Card Round. Milwaukee can also explore potentially getting starting pitcher Blake Snell.
If not, right-handed pitcher Jacob Misiorowski can be called up sometime in 2024. He is the third-best prospect in the Brewers farm system. Misiorowski ended the 2023 season in the minor leagues with the Biloxi Shuckers. It will be interesting to see when he would be with the Nashville Sounds in Triple-A before being called up to the big leagues.
Had the Brewers not re-signed Rea, they would be in a bigger hole right now in the starting rotation. Milwaukee still has time to improve the starting rotation.
