Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio has been in the news recently after some odd quotes and comments surfaced. The phrase that caught a lot of attention was, “is it my job to win a World Series or is it my job to provide a summer entertainment and passion and a way for families to come together?”
This partial quote infuriated fans and had MLB analysts ferociously typing away as they tied those words into the Brewers lack of spending in free agency this off-season. However, more light has since been shed regarding this situation. As one might expect, once the full picture was established, things made more sense.

The question proposed to Mark Attanasio that sparked these words was, “With all that’s happened (since Yelich signed his contract extension), do you foresee ever doing a deal of that magnitude again?” Attansio responded with the following.
“Sure. Yeah. It just has to be the right player at the right time in our life cycle. I thought about this a lot when we did the contract with Yelich. It’s great to have generational players that the fans can follow. We had Yount… but you get into the question of ‘what is your job as the steward of baseball here’?
Is it my job to win a World Series, and now everyone is gonna say ‘oh, he doesn’t want to win a World Series’, but is my job to win a World Series or is my job to provide a summer entertainment and passion and a way for families to come together, because you don’t know when you sign someone.
I decided it was that moreso than what you would get for Christian Yelich in a trade and how that would go into the fancy computer model that Matt Arnold and his team have. So I’m committed to that.”

Now that the full quote and question Attanasio was asked has been provided, his words suddenly make more sense. Fans can still be mad about his lack of spending and approach to building a team, that has clearly been successful by the way, but statements about him not caring about winning, having no desire to win a World Series, and just being in it for the money should be retracted.
