The Milwaukee Brewers are having one of the most fun seasons in recent memory. Of course, it helps that they are winning, but it has not been often that they have been so close to being the top team in the National League. At 81-58, the Brewers are three games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and one-and-a-half games behind the Philadelphia Phillies for overall seeding in the National League Playoffs.
What is more, their 10-game lead over the Craig Counsell-led Chicago Cubs in the National League Central Division is the largest division lead in all of baseball.
Throughout the course of this long season, the Brewers have had to overcome many obstacles and injuries. Yet, one player has been in the lineup every day, through it all: Willy Adames.
Milwaukee Brewers Short Stop Willy Adames Is Making History This Year
As of this writing, the Brewers have played 139 games, and Adames has been the starting shortstop in each and every one of them. He has not taken a day off in the field to be the designated hitter at all this year.
So far this season, Adames is hitting .255/.337/.474 with 29 home runs and 100 RBI. No other player in the National League has as many RBI as him right now (Shohei Ohtani has 99), and no one has played in as many games.
Back in 2022, Adames set the franchise record for home runs by a shortstop in a single season with 31. He is three away from breaking that record. Adames is also just the second shortstop in Brewers history with a 100-RBI season. The first, of course, was Robin Yount.
Adames has also tied an interesting Major League record with 13 three-run home runs so far this season. The first player to hit that many three-run bombs was Ken Griffey Jr. in 1996.
And based on the message he sent to Adames, he hopes that his record falls in 2024.
Ken Griffey Jr. Sends an Encouraging Message to Milwaukee Brewers Star Willy Adames
Earlier on Wednesday morning, the Brewers social media team shared the following video that Ken Griffey Jr. sent for Adames:
“Records are meant to be broken” – Ken Griffey Jr.
Who better to congratulate Willy Adames on tying the single-season 3-run HR record than The Kid himself? pic.twitter.com/AgsFdBP2nR
— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) September 4, 2024
“Hey Willy, congratulations on tying my record. Just tell your teammates to get on base so that you can break it. Records are meant to be broken, and you got a month, so let’s do it.
“Congratulations, keep it going.”
One has to assume that Adames is certainly eyeing the record as he hopes to lead the Brewers deep into the postseason this year. Milwaukee has not won a playoff series since they appeared in the National League Championship Series in 2018.
