The Milwaukee Brewers have been hit hard by the injury bug to begin the 2024 season. Starting pitchers DL Hall and Jakob Junis are currently on paths to recovery. Garrett Mitchell sustained a hand fracture in Spring Training and is expected back in early June. Lastly, star Christian Yelich got off to a hot start but a back injury has kept him sidelined since April 13.
Despite numerous injuries the Milwaukee Brewers are continuing to win games.
Entering play on Monday, May 6 the Brewers possess a 20-13 record. Despite losing two out of three games to the Chicago Cubs over the weekend this puts them on top of the National League Central. Outfielder Blake Perkins has stepped up big time during Yelich’s absence and mainstays such as Brice Turang, Willy Adames, and William Contreras have continued to produce.
One Milwaukee Brewers difference maker is targeting a return to game action against the Kansas City Royals.
Per MLB.com Christian Yelich is hopeful to return before the end of the Brewers current road trip. Their road trip concludes against the Royals on Wednesday, May 8. Milwaukee’s website on their injury updates indicates that Yelich had a breakthrough in his progression at Wrigley Field over the weekend.
Yelich had already been doing better running and throwing before a minor breakthrough on May 3 at Wrigley Field, when he had his best session yet swinging the bat in the cage. His goal, he said, is to play before the end of the Brewers’ current road trip.

If Christian Yelich returns who will be the odd man out in the outfield?
Should Yelich return it’s likely that the Brewers may want to just have him serve as the designated hitter to start with. This could keep the outfield alignment of Sal Frelick, Blake Perkins, and Jackson Chourio intact for a little while longer. Once he gets back to playing defense Frelick does have the ability to shift to third base. This is a position where the Brewers have not received a lot of consistent production from this year and Frelick could factor into that platoon.
