Milwaukee Brewers: Jackson Chourio Not Expected to Be on 2024 Opening Day Roster

Milwaukee Brewers 19-year-old outfielder prospect Jackson Chourio has a chance to be on the roster in 2024, but it appears as if the Brewers have no plans to have him on the Opening Day Roster in 2024. Chourio is a 19-year-old prospect who is the second-best prospect, according to MLB.com, and the number-one prospect in Milwaukee’s farm system.

He played most of the 2023 minor league baseball season with the Biloxi Shuckers in Double-A before being called up to the Nashville Sounds in Triple-A before the minor league baseball season ended. Jackson Chourio has played in 128 games so far this season and has a .282 batting average with 22 home runs and 91 RBIs, along with 44 stolen bases.

His on-base percentage was .338, along with having a .467 slugging percentage and a .805 OPS. General manager Matt Arnold spoke to reporters the other day. He told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com:

“It’s hard to put a timetable on the 19-year-old. But he has a chance to be really special.”

It is very possible that the Milwaukee Brewers will have Chourio in Triple-A for at least one month in 2024 before calling him up to the Triple-A level.

The Milwaukee Brewers Have Outfield Depth, So General Manager Matt Arnold Feels Like There Is No Rush With Jackson Chourio

Arnold is not going to rush his development, and they have some very good outfielders on the roster. Two of those outfielders are Sal Frelick and Christian Yelich. Matt Arnold will find the right time next season to call up Chourio.

Arnold also told the media about his outfield depth on the roster:

“You have depth until you don’t. I think we ran into it a little bit this year. Honestly, we had a number of injuries-guys go down. We had [Sal] Frelick and [Garrett] Mitchell go down just about the same day. You have a lot of outfielders, and then all of a sudden you don’t, so I think we’re conscious of that.”

Blake Perkins, Tyrone Taylor, Joey Wiemer, and Mark Cahna, who was acquired via trade from the New York Mets at the MLB trade deadline, were the other outfielders on the Brewers roster. Matt Arnold will have to make a move in 2024 in order to make room for the prospect, or there will need to be another injury or two for him to be called up.

The most important thing for him is to develop. He is only 19 years old, after all. Jackson Chourio is a right-handed batter and also a right-handed thrower and is 5’11” and weighs 165 lbs. The Milwaukee Brewers signed him as an international free agent on January 15, 2021. There is no need to bring him on the Opening Day roster as long as there is depth on this roster, but once he gets called to the big leagues, Chourio will be here to stay.

Jackson Chourio, the 19-year-old outfielder prospect for the Milwaukee Brewers, is not anticipated to be part of the 2024 Opening Day Roster. Despite being the top prospect in Milwaukee’s farm system, the Brewers seem to have other plans. For more insights and updates, check out the Milwaukee Brewers News.
