The Milwaukee Brewers are reportedly having contract discussions with top prospect Jackson Chourio. Ken Rosenthal indicated that the soon to be 20 year old, who is yet to make his MLB debut, could receive the largest contract in history among players who have accepted such deals. Luis Robert currently holds the record from when the Chicago White Sox gave him a six year deal worth $50.00 MM.
This news is fascinating for several reasons. One is the fact that only five players in MLB history have received long term contracts prior to making their big league debut and Jackson Chourio of the small market Milwaukee Brewers could be the sixth. There are risks associated with a move like this, but there could also be significant rewards.
While Jackson Chourio is rightfully the headliner in all of this news there also was some very interesting news revealed regarding some of the Brewers other top prospects.
Jackson Chourio is not the only top prospect that the Milwaukee Brewers have had contract discussions/offers with (report).
According to Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the Brewers have both made offers and had contract discussions with other top prospects from their current crop of young players prior to their big league debuts.
These sorts of deals have happened elsewhere but not in Milwaukee. Though the Brewers have made offers/discussions with other top prospects from this current crop of young players prior to their debuts. https://t.co/JiNDU7bt1D

He did not reveal the names of the players involved, but players considered to be in this core that have made their MLB debuts include Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick, Joey Wiemer, Brice Turang, and Abner Uribe. Obviously no deals came to fruition, but it is interesting to learn that Milwaukee was at least having those discussions with some of these players when they were still in the minor leagues.
Also not indicated in Curg Hogg’s report is if any of the core prospects in the next wave of players who will be making their MLB debuts soon, besides Jackson Chourio, have had similar discussions. The next wave of players nearly ready to debut in the big leagues includes Jeferson Quero, Robert Gasser, Carlos Rodriguez, Tyler Black, and Jacob Misiorowski.
There is no rush to sign any of these players to long term deals. This includes Jackson Chourio, but if they lock up him or any of the previously mentioned prospects prior to taking off in the big leagues the organization could be on the right of a major financial benefit.
