Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Garrett Mitchell has had a tough go around with injuries. Since being drafted in 2020 he’s missed time with several soft tissue and bony pathologies. During the 2021 season he had a muscle strain in his leg, 2022 an oblique strain, 2023 a subluxation event in his shoulder required surgical treatment, and now before the 2024 regular season has begun he has sustained a hand fracture.
Garrett Mitchell sustained a fracture in his left hand during a Spring Training game.
A report from Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel indicated that Garrett Mitchell initially injured his hand during a swing on Sunday, March 24. He was not hit by a pitch, rather his hand swelled up after being jammed on a swing. A day later it didn’t feel better so the Brewers got an x-ray, discovered a fracture, and are in the process of getting him evaluated by a hand specialist. He will begin the 2024 season on the injured list and tentatively is expected to miss the next one to two months.
What does this mean for the Milwaukee Brewers Opening Day Roster?
With Garrett Mitchell being unable for Opening Day and heading for the injured list there will be one additional spot on the team’s active roster. Catcher Eric Haase may be awarded that spot. Another option would be bringing up an outfielder like Joey Wiemer in which he was optioned to Triple-A earlier this week.

Prior to Mitchell’s injury news Blake Perkins was awarded an Opening Day roster spot. This means that if Haase is awarded a spot on the 26-man roster that the team will still have four active outfielders. Losing Mitchell may mean that Sal Frelick plays more outfield than third base.
