The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs on Memorial Day by a score of 5-1.  Craig Counsell’s return to American Family Field was the main story line entering this contest.  Within the game a stolen base streak owned by Brice Turang was snapped and one Cubs pitching streak continued to grow.

Craig Counsell received lots of boos during his return to American Family Field.

This is Counsell’s first game in Milwaukee as Cubs manager. He was manager of the Brewers last season.

There were multiple occasions revolving around Craig Counsell where boos from Brewers fans echoed the stadium.  A few moments included Counsell going to home plate to exchange the lineup card, his name being announced during starting lineups, during a tribute video, him taking one step out of the dugout to prevent Dansby Swanson from loosing his cool after a strike three call, and while making a pitching change.

Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Brice Turang had his stolen base streak snapped.

Milwaukee Brewers second baseman Brice Turang (2) is tagged out by Chicago Cubs third baseman Nick Madrigal while trying to steal third base during the third inning of their game Monday, May 27, 2024 at American Family Field in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Entering play Brice Turang had stolen 36 consecutive bases without being caught.  The streak dated back to July of 2023 and continued on through his first 19 stolen base attempts of 2024.  His streak is now over as pitcher Justin Steele and catcher Miguel Amaya worked together to catch him gaining extra ground at second base.

With a big lead at second base Amaya signaled to Steele to step off the rubber by placing his right hand on the ground.  The result was Turang being caught in no mans land, taking off for third base, and being easily tagged out on what is officially ruled a caught stealing.

The Chicago Cubs starting pitchers have tossed 25.1 scoreless innings against the Brewers this year.

Milwaukee and Chicago have played four games against one another this season.  During their first series the Cubs saw all their starting pitchers put up zeros and that streak continued on Memorial Day as well.  Making up this 25.1 scoreless innings streak is Hayden Wesneski (6.1 IP), Jameson Taillon (6.0 IP), Javier Assad (6.0), and Justin Steele (7.0).
