The Milwaukee Brewers dropped the series opener on Monday night to their division rival Chicago Cubs. 3-1 was the final score in this game but the Brew Crew left the bases loaded twice, drew six walks against the Cubs starting pitcher, allowed a run to score off a wild pitch, and overall did not play a clean baseball game. Following the game manager Pat Murphy had a perfect three word phrase to sum up this frustrating loss.
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Javier Assad allowed a career high six walks but didn’t allow a run to score.

In this contest Cubs pitcher Javier Assad made his first start after coming off the injured list. His command was not there as he allowed six walks through 3.1 innings pitched. Milwaukee left the bases loaded in both the third and fourth innings and allowed Assad to become the first pitcher since 2016 to walk six, pitch less than four innings, and not give up a single run.
Well, on one hand the Brewers have six walks and two hits through four innings.
On the other, they have made it so that Javier Assad became the first pitcher since 2016 to walk six in fewer than four frames and not give up a single run.

The Milwaukee Brewers did not play a clean baseball game.

Opposing Assad on the mound was rookie Tobias Myers. Myers finished with 5.1 innings pitched, three runs (two earned runs), six hits allowed, two walks, and six punch outs. Some unfortunate plays prevented him from going further in this game.
A few of these plays include Myers himself tripping on the mound (resulting in a balk) and then Michael Busch hitting a two out single to score the games first run. Myers also air mailed a ball into center field in the fourth inning on a force play at second base and then that runner eventually scored on a wild pitch (got the next batter to strike out one pitch later to end the inning). Lastly third basemen Joey Ortiz made a nice play in the bottom of the sixth inning but Rhys Hoskins couldn’t handle the hop at first base and Dansby Swanson reached on an infield single as a result. That was the final batter Myers faced in this game.
Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy had a perfect three word phrase to sum up this loss to the Chicago Cubs.

Following the Brewers 3-1 loss to the Cubs Pat Murphy indicated that a loss like this, “pisses you off”. That may be a perfect summation for this game, but Murphy’s full quote really put everything into perspective. Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel provided the full quote of, “It’s frustrating and it pisses you off but you understand it. You understand that it’s part of the game and you understand that it’s part of these guys growing up.”
Milwaukee and Chicago have two more games left this week. After that they won’t meet again during the 2024 regular season.
