In 2021 the Milwaukee Brewers traded Orlando Arcia to the Atlanta Braves.  He was once a top prospect in their organization but was struggling to consistently contribute at the plate at the big league level.  During his first season with the Braves he ended up winning a World Series and in his third year he was announced as the starting shortstop in the All-Star game.

At the 2023 All-Star game former Brewers pitcher Josh Hader and current Milwaukee closer Devin Williams were locker mates.  This led to some fun interactions between the two.  One topic they were each asked about was their former teammate Orlando Arcia being the National League starting shortstop.

Milwaukee Brewers closer Devin Williams and San Diego Padres closer Josh Hader speak out on Orlando Arcia earning starting All-Star shortstop honors.

For Devin Williams, he was initially shocked.  However he then went on to recall some incredible defensive plays that his former shortstop made in the past.

“I was really shocked.  He was one of the guys in the clubhouse. He always brought a lot of energy. It was definitely a big surprise when that happened.”

“He’s always been, for me, one of the best defenders I’ve ever seen.  When he was in the minor leagues, I could recall three or four plays that I still remember to this day because I was so amazed he made that play. I remember one time in spring training, he’s playing shortstop, a righty hits a ball like in the 6-hole, and it skipped and hit the third baseman, bounced right off his cheek. And Arcia is just running to the hole already.”

Former Brewers closer and current Padre Josh Hader was excited for his former teammate.  He talked about his positive presence day in and day out and was genuinely happy for him.

“It’s amazing; I grew up with him in the minor leagues.  But once he got traded, man, he’s a big personality to have on your side. Hard player, always loves to have fun. That man is always smiling. It’s just fun, contagious energy to have around.”

The Atlanta Braves are positioned nicely entering the second half of the season.  Orlando Arcia should continue to play the premier position in shortstop and be a big part of what they accomplish this season.

Dive into the remarkable journey of Orlando Arcia, from his time with the Milwaukee Brewers to his All-Star success with the Atlanta Braves. Frequently Asked Questions

Who was Orlando Arcia traded for?

On April 6, 2021, Orlando Arcia was traded by the Brewers to the Atlanta Braves for Patrick Weigel and Chad Sobotka. Arcia was then assigned to the Triple-A Gwinnett Stripers, but soon on July 3, he was recalled from Gwinnett.

How did the Braves get Orlando Arcia?

The Atlanta Braves acquired Orlando Arcia in 2021 for Chad Sobotka, a pitcher who is now out of baseball, and Patrick Weigel, another pitcher who currently plays for an independent team in Kansas. This trade was a steal deal for the Braves, considering the low value Arcia had in the trade market after his time in Milwaukee.

    Where did Orlando Arcia go?

Orlando Arcia joined his Braves teammates Ronald Acuna Jr. as starters in Seattle, after earning a spot during Spring Training. The 1st-time All-Stars Arcia and Murphy also joined the lineup, displaying their talent in the game.
