The Marquette men’s basketball team fell to conference rival Providence 65-63 on Sunday. Senior guard Darryl Morsell led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 15 points, while also collecting five rebounds, five assists, and six steals.
Marquette controlled the game for the majority until the second half when Providence really started to come into their own.
In the first half, grad student Kur Kuath made a dunk assisted by Morsell, which brought the Golden Eagles to an early 17-9 lead with nine minutes remaining. Redshirt freshman Justin Lewis was able to close out the half nicely, recording a steal which ultimately led to a bucket by Morsell, and then adding four more points himself. Marquette had a six point lead at the end of the half, 29-23.
Marquette led by as much as nine in the second half and was ahead for the majority of it. With 11 minutes remaining, Providence was able to tie the game on a three-point jump shot by Al Durham. For the rest of the game, it was a back-and-forth match with neither team seeming to pull away.
Trailing by two points with 14 seconds left, Marquette had one last chance to tie or win the game. Redshirt freshman Tyler Kolek took the shot for the Golden Eagles, but came up short. Providence won by a final score of 65-63.
The Golden Eagles will have a chance to get back on track when they face off against No. 14 ranked Villanova at home on Wednesday. Tip-off is set for 9pm CT.
