The #17 Marquette Golden Eagles were home on Monday afternoon against the Villanova Wildcats. Marquette’s offense was efficient all game long against Villanova and took them down by a final score of 87-74. The Golden Eagles improved to 12-5 on the season and improved to 3-3 in conference play.
As for the Wildcats, they dropped to 11-6 on the year and 4-2 in conference play. This was a much-needed win for Marquette because they didn’t need to drop to 2-4 in conference play. One of the reasons why the Marquette Golden Eagles were able to come out on top in this was because of the play by point guard Tyler Kolek.
He scored 21 points, recorded five rebounds, and recorded 11 assists. Kolek needs more games of scoring in double figures. There were two other players in this contest that scored in double figures for Marquette. Kam Jones led them in scoring with 22 points in the game.
Oso Ighodaro also added 18 points for the Golden Eagles. He has been one of the most consistent players on this basketball this season. Marquette has been shaky to start the season in conference play, but this win against a better Big East Conference team will go a long way to help their confidence moving forward.
With the stars contributing in a big way on Monday against Villanova, Stevie Mitchell spoke to Sophia Woods of the Marquette Wire after the game and he told her about the big three’s performance by saying:
“It’s no secret that they’re three of our main guys that we need.”
Marquette is a better basketball team when Tyler Kolek and their main players are scoring. They will need more of this moving forward.
Villanova Wildcats Also Have Three Players Score in Double Figures Against the Marquette Golden Eagles
Villanova had a few players who scored in double figures against Marquette. Mark Armstrong scored 24 points for the Wildcats and led the way for them and also grabbed two rebounds and recorded three assists. Eric Dixon scored 15 points for the Villanova Wildcats and Brendan Hausen also added 11 points.
With this win for Marquette, they appear to be in a good spot. The St. John’s Red Storm will be their next game on the road on Saturday afternoon.
