LSU Tigers wide receiver Malik Nabers is expected to play in the ReliaQuest Bowl on New Year’s Day against the Wisconsin Badgers despite being projected to be a high draft pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Outside of Marvin Harrison Jr. of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Nabers has been projected in many mock drafts to go in the Top 10.
His teammate, quarterback Jayden Daniels, opted out of the bowl game to focus on the 2024 NFL Draft. With Nabers being available to play against the Badgers, this will be good for redshirt sophomore quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
This season for the LSU Tigers, Malik Nabers has caught 86 passes for 1,546 yards receiving, and 14 touchdowns. He averaged 18.0 yards per reception in 12 games for a Tigers team that went 9-3 this season. Nabers went over 100 yards receiving in nine of the 12 games he played in this season for LSU.
Nabers is 6’0″ and weighs 200 lbs. He also had five games this season for the Tigers where he scored at least two touchdowns. Everyone seems to get lost about Marvin Harrison Jr., but Malik Nabers is just as good of an NFL prospect.
If Malik Nabers Opts Out of the Bowl At the Last Second Against the Wisconsin Badgers, Freshman Wide Receiver Shelton Sampson Jr. Is the Name to Watch For
There is time between now and Monday for Nabers to opt out of the bowl game to not risk his NFL future, but good for him to want to play in the game and be there for his teammates. If Malik Nabers does not play on Monday for LSU, one of the wide receivers that the Wisconsin Badgers are going to have to keep an eye on is freshman wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr.
Sampson Jr. is a freshman from Baton Rouge, Louisiana and he is projected to be a big part of the LSU Tigers offense in 2024 and beyond. Shelton Sampson Jr. did not record a catch in 12 games this season and could have a breakout party in the Reliaquest Bowl against the Badgers.
According to 247sports, Sampson Jr. was a four-star recruit coming out of high school. Another wide receiver on LSU who may not play but is currently projected to play is Brian Thomas Jr. He caught 60 passes for 1,079 yards receiving and 15 touchdowns. Thomas Jr. averaged 18 yards per catch.
Even if they miss the bowl game against the Badgers, Sampson Jr. will be ready to step up. They have an embarrassment of riches of talent that they could replace Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas Jr. possibly with ease. That is the kind of depth the LSU football program has compared to the Wisconsin football program.
