Former Milwaukee Brewers prospect Keston Hiura showed a lot of potential early on to his professional career. He always had a knack for slugging the ball but high strikeout rates and defensive concerns ultimately led to his downfall, loss of big league playing time, and eventually joining a new organization this off-season.
Keston Hiura spent all of 2023 with the Milwaukee Brewers but in the minor leagues.
Last spring the Brewers elected to remove their ninth overall pick from their 40-man roster. Due to not enough MLB service time and that being his first time outrighted he could not dispute the transaction or initially elect free agency. He ended up putting together monster numbers in Triple-A that consisted of a .311 batting average, .960 OPS, 23 home runs, 79 RBI, and a 24.7% strikeout rate.
The Detroit Tigers signed Keston Hiura to a minor league contract this off-season.
After completing the 2023 season Hiura was eligible to elect free agency. He did so and ended up signing a minor league contract with the Detroit Tigers. His deal included an invite to big league camp in which during Spring Training this year he accumulated 31 at-bats, 10 hits, two home runs, and nine RBI.
Keston Hiura will not make the Tigers 2024 Opening Day roster.
The latest news out of Tigers camp is that Keston Hiura was re-assigned to minor league camp and will begin the year in Triple-A. Per MLB Trade Rumors there is one wrinkle called a mobility clause in which on March 26, June 1, and August 1 Detroit has to see if any other ball club will give him a 40-man roster spot. If any of them say yes, the Tigers either have to call him up themselves or trade him to the team that wants him.
