Kadarius Toney Not Spotted on Field at Chiefs Training Camp
Kadarius Toney has had a history of injuries already throughout his young NFL career. There was a reason why the New York Giants traded him at the NFL trade deadline last season for multiple draft picks. Yes, Toney helped Kansas City win a Super Bowl last season by having a punt return for a touchdown and also in other ways, but this is a huge concern for this football team heading into the NFL regular season.
Last season, he only had 16 receptions for 171 yards receiving and two touchdowns. Kadarius Toney averaged 10.7 yards per reception. If healthy, he is a very talented wide receiver, but his body seems to keep on betraying him. For some odd reason, there has been bad beef between him and New York Giants fans.
The Kansas City Chiefs need to figure out what to do in the receiver room without Kadarius Toney in the meantime. Juju Smith-Schuster is currently with the New England Patriots after being with the Kansas City Chiefs last season.
Kadarius Toney was projected to be the No. 1 wide receiver on Kansas City’s wide receiver depth chart. Is there anyone to trust in this wide receiver core other than tight end Travis Kelce? At the current moment, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Skyy Moore are projected to be the starting wide receivers outside of Toney.
Valdes-Scantling caught 42 passes for 687 yards and two touchdowns last season. He averaged 16.4 yards per catch.
Moore caught 22 passes for 250 yards last season. He averaged 11.4 yards per catch.
There are other wide receivers on the roster that now have a potential chance to shine on the roster during training camp with the injury of Kadarius Toney. It will be interesting to see how long he will be sidelined for.
Who are some of the other wide receivers that have a chance to make a name for themselves during Chiefs training camp with his injury?
Rashee Rice
Rice was the 55th overall pick (second-round selection) in the 2023 NFL Draft out of SMU. He will get a lot of reps with quarterback Patrick Mahomes with Kadarius Toney sidelined. The Kansas City Chiefs drafted him, thinking he would make a massive impact with this football team right away.
Rashee Rice is going to get various looks during Chiefs Training Camp. He will be one name to watch.
Richie James
Richie James played for the New York Giants a season ago and was also teammates with Kadarius Toney. James was not brought back by New York this offseason.
There was a point in time when people thought he was going to be cut by the Giants when he dropped key punts in a game last season against the Seattle Seahawks, but Richie James kept working. It would be a surprise to see Richie James on the field a lot for the Kansas City Chiefs.
Justin Watson
Justin Watson is a player who needs a heavier workload without Kadarius Toney around. He is someone who can be a reliable player for Patrick Mahomes. There have been flashes of that in the past. Watson runs great routes and has good hands.
Justyn Ross
Ross played college football at Clemson, and he is entering his second season in the NFL. He was not drafted and is climbing his way up the Kansas City Chiefs depth chart. Justyn Ross could be one of those standouts in training camp for the Kansas City Chiefs with not having Kadarius Toney available.
