The Houston Astros are looking to gear up for a second half surge and a post-season run by potentially trading for a former MVP. They are a very right-handed heavy offensive lineup, so adding someone who swings from the opposite side is a need of theirs. One player that they have called about is Chicago Cubs 1B/OF Cody Bellinger. This information was provided by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
Chicago Cubs 1B/OF Cody Bellinger is receiving trade interest from the Houston Astros.
Cody Bellinger is essentially a rental player at this year’s trade deadline. He has a 2024 mutual option worth $12 million and a $5.5 million buyout. Odds are that no matter what team he finishes this season with is that next year’s mutual option will be declined.
Performance wise this year Bellinger has a .305/.362/.531 slash line with a 139 OPS+. He has belted 12 home runs and stolen 11 bases as well. Injuries have limited him to just 60 games, but he appears to be on the verge of a resurgence season and would benefit any contending team.
Left-handed hitting Yordan Alvarez and Michael Brantley are currently out injured, so it will be interesting to see if the Houston Astros are able to acquire Cody Bellinger prior to the Aug 1 trade deadline.
