The Green Bay Packers 2024 offseason saw the roster continue the youth movement and primed many position groups for a competitive training camp schedule. With departures like David Bakhtiari, Aaron Jones, Devondre Campbell, and Rasul Douglas, many young Packers are ready to take a step into bigger roles.
Two important training camp battles to look forward to center around key roles on the offense and defense. Who will protect Jordan Love and who will be the first line of defense against the pass?
Can Green Bay Packers First Round Pick Find Himself Starting Week 1?
The Green Bay Packers offensive line put on an impressive display in the 2023-24 season protecting Jordan Love, allowing just 30 sacks on the season (3rd lowest). During a time when future hall-of-fame left tackle and current free agent David Bakhtiari was unavailable, the Packers found productivity with their versatile room of linemen. Now after the departure of LT David Bakhtiari and G John Runyan Jr, the Green Bay Packers appear committed to fielding the five best players to protect the quarterback.
“And I don’t think you’ll really, truly know until we get out there, we get pads on. I thought for the most part our guys up front did a pretty decent job taking care of one another.”Matt Lafleur said in regards to the offensive line.
“I think it (the starting offensive line) will kind of unfold when we get into camp and especially when we get into the preseason games,” added LaFleur. “We’ve got two opportunities to practice against somebody else, so I think it will unfold for us in training camp.”
Jordan Morgan, the Packers’ first-round pick in 2024, was drafted for his versatility. Standing at 6’5 311 lbs, Morgan has the potential to play at any position along the offensive line.
“There’s nothing he can’t do,” said LaFleur. “For him, it’s just about putting it all together mentally. I think there’s been a lot put on his plate, and I think at times his head is spinning. But you’ve just got to keep chopping and grinding and working through it. There’s gonna be mistakes. I think a big part of this is just being resilient throughout that process and making sure that you don’t lose confidence because certainly he has all the skills to be as good as he wants to be.”
The fate of the Green Bay Packers offense will lie with their decisions along the offensive line. Time will show if Jordan Morgan will find production in year one.
Who Will Start On The Opposite Side Of Jaire Alexander For The Green Bay Packers?
Eric Stokes found himself running into injuries after his first-round selection by the Packers in 2021, despite his strong rookie season. In 2023 Carrington Vallentine emerged as a consistent corner for Green Bay, leading to the Packers trading veteran corner Rasul Douglas in the middle of the season. Now with Stokes hopefully ready to refresh his career, the premium position is up for grabs with talent.
“I think he’s as good as I’ve ever seen him. Both mentally and on the field,” said LaFleur. “I want to temper the expectations with that, but I do really mean that. He’s out there competing each and every day. He looks fully healthy. He’s doing a great job of challenging our wide receivers, he’s always in great phase, and I think you see that personality is back.”
