Green Bay Packers offensive lineman Yosh Nijman did not have the best of campaigns last term, particularly towards the latter part of the season. At that point, it looked like he was in line to lose the starting gig. True enough, this was exactly the direction the team decided to take over the offseason.
Green Bay Packers OL Zach Tom Overtakes Yosh Nijman in Pecking Order
After starting 13 games in 2022, Nijman will now need to settle in on the bench for Green Bay — at least to start the new season. This is after it was announced that incoming second-year tackle Zach Tom did enough in training camp and preseason to earn the starting spot over Nijman.
You could say that it was a long time coming given the trajectory of both players, but it still came as a bit of a surprise for some when Nijman’s demotion was announced.

Nijman did not have a shortage of opportunities to try and secure his spot in the starting lineup. The Packers even decided to keep the 27-year-old in Green Bay by using a second-round tender to retain his services. In spite of the chances he had to prove himself, Nijman was not able to do enough to surpass Tom in the pecking order.
Offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich has now spoken out about Nijman’s offseason demotion. The coach got brutally honest as he described the former Virginia Tech standout’s status with the team:
“Right now, he’s a backup tackle for us,” Stenavich said Thursday, via Brandon Carwile of Packers Wire. “That’s where he’s at and football is a very competitive sport and some guys rise to that competition and some guys don’t, so that’s basically what I have to say about that.”
That’s not exactly a vote of confidence for Nijman, who appears to have left a bit of disappointment in Stenavich’s mind. It’s going to be an uphill battle ahead for Nijman this season as he looks to recapture his starting spot from Zach Tom.
