The Green Bay Packers are entering a new era of quarterback play. Jordan Love is the new starting quarterback after two years backing up future Hall of Famer and four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers. Of course, Tim Boyle was Rodgers’ backup in 2020 while Love ran the practice squad. Now that Love is under center, the question (well, one of many) is who should be his backup? Danny Etling is still on the roster after running the practice squad last season and Sean Clifford was drafted in the fifth round of this year’s NFL Draft. Neither of them has played a single snap in a NFL regular season game, though.

Due to their lack of experience, there have been rumors that Green Bay may look into signing a veteran quarterback to backup Love. If this is, indeed, the route they choose to take, former Minnesota Vikings quarterback Teddy Bridgewater has been named as a quality option.
Could the Green Bay Packers Consider Former Minnesota Vikings Quarterback Teddy Bridgewater for Their Backup Role?
In an article posted by Yardbarker, the argument for signing Bridgewater is explained as follows:
“Teddy Bridgewater remains to be one the better quarterbacks left on the free agency market. At this point it’s looking like he’d be taking another backup role and it’d make perfect sense for the Packers. Other then Love, the only other quarterbacks on the roster are Danny Etling and rookie Sean Clifford.
“Bridgewater would likely be the immediate backup and would be very serviceable if Love were to go down. He has also played Green Bay a decent amount of times during his time with the Vikings. If the price is right, the Packers should get some more experience in the QB room and get Teddy Two Gloves.”
There was a time when Bridgewater was considered the next great Vikings quarterback. He made the Pro Bowl in his second season, 2014, but suffered an ACL tear early the next season. His career took a different trajectory and he has bounced around the NFL for the past few years, playing for four different teams in each of the past four seasons.
After leaving Minnesota following the 2015 season, Bridgewater spent two seasons with the New Orleans Saints backing up Drew Brees. In 2020, he signed with the Carolina Panthers to be their starting quarterback. Despite the team’s 4-11 record with him as their starter, Bridgewater played well throwing for 3,733 yards, 15 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He had a passer rating of 92.1 and a QBR of 56.8.
In 2021, Bridgewater was the starting quarterback of the Denver Broncos. Prior to their epic collapse in 2022 with Russell Wilson, Bridgewater led them to a 7-7 record, throwing for 3,052 yards, 18 touchdowns, and just seven interceptions. He had a passer rating of 94.9 and a QBR of 47.4.
Last season, Bridgewater served as the backup quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. He appeared in five games, starting two of them and threw four touchdowns and four interceptions.
As one can see, Bridgewater has been all over the NFL and could provide some invaluable information to the young quarterback room. There is a new NFL rule that allows teams to carry a third quarterback on their roster without wasting a 53-man roster spot. With this rule, Green Bay could bring Bridgewater aboard for this year without having to get rid of either Clifford or Etling.
It may be the wise move to make, just to get some veteran eyes in the quarterback room.
