The Green Bay Packers will be looking to make roster improvements this offseason and one of the names that they could potentially take a look at is running back Tony Pollard. He will be a free agent in March and it would be interesting to see if the Dallas Cowboys kept him around for the long haul or not.
Pollard this past season with the Dallas Cowboys rushed for 1,005 yards on 252 carries and six touchdowns and averaged 4.0 yards per carry. He also caught 55 passes for 311 yards receiving and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 5.7 yards per carry. Tony Pollard was targeted 67 times by quarterback Dak Prescott.
Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon mentioned Pollard as a landing spot for the Green Bay Packers this offseason. He said about them getting Pollard possibly by saying:
“Tony Pollard endured a disappointing season that included an eight-game scoreless streak and zero touchdowns as a receiver. Sure, he topped the 1,000-yard mark again but mustered an inefficient 4.0 per carry. Based on his upside, the Cowboys should not be quick to move on. Pollard can still be a productive back in Dallas. After yet another postseason flop, however, Jerry Jones will be desperate to make changes. That may lead to Jones targeting a high-profile running back, such as Derrick Henry or Austin Ekeler. Should the Cowboys decide not to keep him, Pollard would be a great target—especially for an offense that may lose a running back on the market. For example, the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Chargers may need to replace AJ Dillon and Ekeler, respectively. Since he’ll be 27 next season, Pollard may be able to command an annual rate around $7 million on a two- or three-year contract.”
The Green Bay Packers May Decide Not to Sign Tony Pollard And Draft Multiple Running Backs in the NFL Draft Instead
Green Bay will have many options this offseason in how to fix the running back room for the future. Aaron Jones will be 30 entering next season and will have one year left on his contract. AJ Dillon is a free agent and it is very possible general manager Brian Gutekunst won’t re-sign him.
Tony Pollard would be an excellent number-two running back behind Aaron Jones. Pollard was a solid number-two running back behind Ezekiel Elliott for a couple of seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.
However instead of signing running backs of the free agent market, Green Bay may want to draft a couple of running backs with 11 of their 2024 NFL Draft selections. The Packers could develop those young talented running backs like they have with the rookie tight ends and wide receivers this past season. Tony Pollard would be a home run signing for Green Bay, but they may lean toward the drafting and developing method with the running back position.
